I kept seeing MAMA Thai ConNext Boat Noodles all over social media a few months ago, and James said he really wanted to try it too. It was hard to find back then, but it’s a lot easier to find now. When I was in Thailand, a few other brands were selling their own instant boat noodles. I love MAMA, so I had high hopes for this one. Thai ConNext is their premium line made for people outside Thailand.

Produced in Thailand by Thai President Foods Public Company Limited.

What’s in the Package

Inside the pack is a block of flat rice noodles and three packets. There’s a thick, dark seasoning sauce, a small seasoning oil, and a dried packet of fried garlic, spring onion and coriander.

How to Cook MAMA Thai ConNext Instant Boat Noodles

  1. Bring about 1 1/4 cups (300ml) of water to a boil.
  2. Add the rice noodles and cook for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Remove from heat and add the contents of all three packets.
  4. Stir well and serve.

Note: Stick to the cook time on the pack. The rice noodles get mushy if you cook them too long. The water amount is right as written.

How Does It Taste

The flavor is strong. It was more sour than I expected, even for boat noodles. The pack lists tamarind and vinegar in the seasoning.

It’s not as deep as real boat noodles. To me it tasted more like a spicy pho than boat noodles, but it’s really good.

The noodles are perfect rice noodles. They’re flat and cook fast, so don’t leave them in longer than the pack says or they turn mushy. Eat it quick, too. The noodles keep soaking up the broth while they sit.

How Does It Compare

If you want to try another instant boat noodle, I’ve also reviewed the Thasiam Thai Boat Noodles. If you’re after pho instead, MAMA’s own MAMA Pho Bo Beef Noodle Soup is the one to grab.

How to Level Up MAMA Thai ConNext Instant Boat Noodles

I built a full bowl with thin sliced hotpot beef, pork meatballs, canned quail eggs, water spinach, bean sprouts, Thai basil, green onions and fresh Thai chilies. Add fried garlic and pork rinds right before you eat so they stay crunchy.

Skip the lime. The broth is already sour enough.

Final Verdict

It’s lighter than real boat noodles, but it’s a strong, sour bowl with great rice noodles, and I enjoyed it. I’d buy it again.
