Tapatio Shrimp smells a little more fragrant than the Chicken version but once you’re eating it the two are nearly identical. Same garlic onion base, same thin broth, similar spice level. It’s actually slightly milder than the Chicken.

Produced in Vietnam.

What’s in the Package

Inside the cup, there’s a round block of fried wheat noodles and seasoning powder. The noodles are coated in a fine, reddish-orange shrimp seasoning powder and topped with a mix of dehydrated vegetables.

How to Cook Tapatรญo Shrimp Ramen

  1. Fill the cup to the inside fill line with room-temperature water.
  2. Cook uncovered on high for 3 minutes.
  3. Let the cup stand for 1 minute. This allows the shrimp-flavored broth to thicken and the red bell peppers to soften properly.
  4. Stir well to incorporate the seasoning that often settles in the center of the noodle block.

How Does It Taste

The shrimp character is a hint rather than a feature. There’s a slightly more fragrant quality to the smell that doesn’t fully carry through into the broth. The spice is under a 1 out of 5. It has less heat than the Chicken. It’s like adding a couple drops of Tapatio hot sauce to plain noodle water and calling it done.

The noodles are thin and wavy with no real springiness or chew. Thin broth. Nothing memorable on either front. The bowl needs toppings to become worth finishing.

How Does It Compare

Within the Tapatio lineup the Shrimp is the mildest variety we’ve reviewed. The Chicken is nearly identical but with slightly more heat. The Original is equally flat. The Carne Asada with Lime is the only one with a distinct profile. For a shrimp instant ramen that actually delivers shrimp flavor the Mama Tom Yum Shrimp and Maruchan Shrimp Flavor are both better options.

How to Level Up Tapatio Shrimp Ramen Noodle Soup

Roasted green chilies add a depth and sweetness that complements the mild shrimp base. Valentina hot sauce delivers the heat this bowl is missing. Both together give it more of the Tapatio character the packet promises but doesn’t deliver.

Final Verdict

A mild forgettable shrimp broth that tastes almost identical to the Chicken. The fragrant smell is the only thing that distinguishes it. Add hot sauce and roasted green chilies and it finds some footing. Skip the additions and there’s not much here.
