When I first featured Wai Wai Classic Oriental on my channel I was not prepared for the response. Everyone had strong feelings about this brand. That kind of reaction made me pay closer attention when I finally sat down to try it properly.

Produced in Thailand.

What’s in the Package

Inside the packaging, youโ€™ll find a square block of thin, pre-seasoned fried wheat noodles and two sachets. The clear double-sachet contains the seasoning powder and chili powder, while the small blue sachet contains seasoned oil.

Noodle brick and two seasoning packets.

How to Cook Wai Wai Noodles Classic Oriental Instant Noodles

Cooking directions per package instructions:

  1. Place noodles and seasoning into a bowl. Add 320ml boiling water.
  2. Cover for 3 minutes.
  3. Stir, noodles are ready to serve.

How Does It Taste

The noodles are pre-seasoned and you can actually see it in the color. It’s darker in certain spots where the seasoning has absorbed into the dough. That’s an unusual detail that most instant noodles don’t have and it contributes to the flavor in a way that’s noticeable from the first bite.

The fried shallot and garlic flavor comes through clearly and forms a strong base. There’s a slight tanginess to the broth that I liked and a spice powder that’s mild and very tolerable at a 1 out of 5. The overall profile is savory, slightly tangy, and more interesting than the plain packaging suggests.

The noodles are thin and wavy but have a good bite despite the thinness.

How Does It Compare

Within the Thai instant noodle category this sits alongside the Mama Chicken and Wai Wai Quick Zabb Tom Yum Shrimp as a budget staple with a loyal following. The Mama is more widely available and has more broth complexity. The Wai Wai Classic is simpler but the pre-seasoned noodle format gives it a texture and flavor integration that the Mama doesn’t have. The Tom Yum is the spicier and more assertive Wai Wai option.

How to Level Up Wai Wai Noodles Classic Oriental Instant Noodles

Lime juice and freshly sliced jalapeรฑo add the brightness and heat the bowl is reaching toward but holding back on. Minced pork or any smoked meat, smoked brisket or pulled pork, works naturally against the shallot and garlic base. A pinch of sugar rounds out the slight tanginess.

Final Verdict

The devoted following makes sense once you taste it. The pre-seasoned noodles and the fried shallot base give it a character that most budget instant noodles don’t have. Simple but good and clearly meaningful to a lot of people who grew up with it.

It’s a good, subtle noodles. Can it it raw too, like mix the uncooked broken noodles and veggies with the seasoning and it’s good on its own or can cook it and add your topping and it’s great too

Think about its overall taste (savory, sweet, sour), richness, and authenticity to the advertised flavor.
Think about their texture, consistency, and how well they held up in the broth.
