When I was a kid my younger brother and I used to smash instant ramen while it was still in the packaging, add the seasoning packet, and eat it dry. We did it when we were too lazy to cook. The Mama Tom Yum was our go-to. The Ottogi Bulgogi Ramen Snack is the official version of exactly that.

Produced in the United States. Distributed by Korea.

What’s in the Package

Inside the packaging, you’ll find a square block of thin, fried wheat noodles and a single silver sachet containing the Bulgogi seasoning powder.

How to “Cook” Ottogi Ppushu Ppushu

  1. Before opening the bag, use your hands to crush the noodle block into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Open the bag and pour in the Bulgogi seasoning powder.
  3. Hold the top of the bag shut and shake it vigorously to ensure every noodle fragment is coated in the powder.
  4. Enjoy them straight out of the bag as a crunchy snack.

How Does It Taste

You smash the noodles inside the bag, add the seasoning, seal it, and shake. The result is crispy seasoned noodle pieces with a sweet and salty bulgogi flavor and a hint of mushroom underneath. It’s good. The sweetness is the dominant note and it can get a little strong toward the end of the bag but that’s the trade-off with a sweet-forward snack format.

The texture is exactly what you’d expect from uncooked fried noodles. It’s crunchy, light, and satisfying in the way that snacking on dry ramen has always been. The noodles are more brittle than standard instant noodle blocks which makes the smashing step easier.

How Does It Compare

This is the only dedicated ramen snack format we’ve reviewed on the site. The closest thing in terms of a sweet salty Korean flavor profile is the Paldo Gompaghetti Korean Beef Flavor but that’s a cooked bowl. The Ottogi Bulgogi Snack is its own thing. It’s a product designed for the way a lot of people were already eating instant ramen anyway.

How to Level Up Ottogi Bulgogi Flavor Ramen Snack

A shake of Tajin cuts through the sweetness with chili and lime and rebalances the flavor. That’s the one addition that changes the whole experience.

Final Verdict

A sweet salty bulgogi snack that tastes exactly like it sounds. The sweetness builds as you eat so having something to cut through it, Tajin, a drink, anything acidic, helps. Good for what it is and legitimately nostalgic if you grew up eating dry ramen as a snack.
