Kurata Foods Vegan Tomato Spicy Ramen in package

I snagged this Kurata Foods Vegan Tomato Spicy ramen along with the regular vegan version at the Winter Fancy Food show, and it was a unique experience because the Japanese chef who created it was actually there to talk about it.

Produced in Japan

A big plus is that it comes with two servings, which is always convenient. Even though the package says spicy, there was no spice in my opinion.

The noodles in this instant ramen look pretty good, especially for a quick meal. There’s a lot of flavor packed into this ramen. You get a strong garlic flavor upfront, but a pleasant tomato flavor comes through at the end, though it’s not overpowering. The broth does get thicker as it sits. It’s slightly on the salty side, so keep that in mind.

To complement the existing flavors, I’d definitely recommend adding some fresh basil and fresh herbs. It would really brighten up the tomato and garlic notes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you determine the spice level?

For the spice level, my friend James, who taste tests the ramens with me, gives his rating out of 5 based on his experience with the heat. My own spice tolerance tends to be higher than most, so James’s rating gives a more general sense of the spiciness. Keep in mind that spice is still subjective, so what’s mild for him might be spicy for you, and vice versa!

What does “Broth Viscosity” mean?

That’s how thick or thin the broth is. A 1/5 would be very watery, while a 5/5 would be super thick and almost syrupy.

How do you rate “Noodle Thickness”?

This is just a general gauge of how thick the noodles are compared to other instant ramen noodles I’ve tried. A 1/5 would be very thin, like vermicelli, and a 5/5 would be very thick and wide.

What do you mean by “Noodle Type”?

Here, I’m just describing the style or texture of the noodles, like “udon-like” for a chewy and thick noodle, or “thin and curly” for a more classic instant ramen style.
