The Berruto Maccheroncini Pasta Cup is the second product I’ve tried from Berruto. The Tagliatelle was our first Italian instant pasta experience on this site and this one is similar.

Produced in Italy.

What’s in the Package

Inside the cup, you will find a portion of dry durum wheat semolina maccheroncini. The seasoning is a blend of powdered cheese, black pepper, potato starch, and garlic.

How to Cook Berruto Maccheroncini Pasta Cup

  1. Fill with cold water to the inner line.
  2. Stir well to dissolve the tomato-cheese powder.
  3. Microwave for 2 minutes (or 3 minutes if you want it softer).
  4. Stir again and let it stand for 1 minute.

How Does It Taste

The texture is the first thing to address. Three minutes at the suggested time wasn’t enough. The pasta came out hard and hadn’t reached al dente. Give it at least 3.5 to 4 minutes.

The flavor has a tomato base with oregano and parsley running through it. The traditional Italian seasoning notes that are there. The issue is that the tomato comes across sharp and a little thin rather than rich and rounded. James and I both felt like it needed more depth.

How Does It Compare

The Berruto Tagliatelle is the same brand, same format, same Italian concept. The Tagliatelle has a creamy mushroom direction that’s more interesting than the tomato base here.

How to Level Up Berruto Maccheroncini Pasta Cup

A splash of V8 tomato juice stirred into the finished pasta deepens the tomato base and adds the richness the thin sauce is missing. A generous amount of grated Parmesan on top adds the creaminess and saltiness that brings the whole thing together.

Final Verdict

The Berruto Maccheroncini Pasta Cup has the right flavor instincts with the tomato, oregano, parsley, but the execution needs adjustment. Microwave it longer than the package says, add V8 and Parmesan, and it becomes a more enjoyable bowl. It’s not something James or I would reach for regularly but with a little help it gets closer to what it’s trying to be.
