The Prima Taste Singapore Wholegrain La Mian is the fourth product I’ve tried from Prima Taste and the brand continues to impress where it matters most which is the broth. This one uses 51% super fine whole grain flour in the noodles and comes steamed and air-dried rather than fried. I’ll be honest: straight out of the package it looks and smells a bit underwhelming.

Produced in Singapore.

How to Prepare It

  1. Add Soup Base (A) and Premix (B) into 500ml of water. Stir well and bring to a boil.
  2. Place the noodle block into the boiling soup.
  3. Lower the heat to a medium-simmer and cook for 7 minutes.
  4. Stir again before serving to ensure the powders haven’t settled at the bottom.

How Does It Taste

The whole grain noodles eat exactly like you’d expect whole grain spaghetti to eat. They lack the processed bounce that makes instant ramen satisfying and the texture divided our thoughts. I didn’t mind it, but James absolutely hated the noodles.

The broth is a completely different story. It’s arguably better than the curry you’d get at a mediocre Southeast Asian restaurant. The flavor is built from dried shrimp, coconut milk, curry powder, kaffir lime, and lemongrass, and all of it comes through. The dried coconut powder is the dominant smell and it’s a good one. The taste lands somewhere between a lighter Khao Soi and a Khao Poon.

One important cooking note: use a small burner and watch the heat. The coconut milk in the broth makes it prone to boiling over if you’re not paying attention.

How Does It Compare

Within the Prima Taste lineup on this site the Wholegrain La Mian has the most complex broth of everything reviewed. The Laksa La Mian is the closest comparison since it’s also coconut-forward, also Southeast Asian in character. The Laksa is slightly more refined. The Wholegrain has a deeper curry direction. The Chili Crab is in a completely different flavor lane. All three demonstrate why Prima Taste is in a premium category of its own in the instant noodle space.

How to Level Up Prima Taste Singapore Wholegrain La Mian

Shredded chicken and shrimp are the natural protein additions for this broth. Shredded cabbage, cilantro, and carrots give the bowl the vegetable element it needs. Fried shallots on top for crunch and a spoonful of sambal to push the heat beyond where the base broth leaves it.

Final Verdict

If you can make peace with the whole grain texture the coconut curry broth makes this one of the most impressive instant noodle products on the site. Use a small burner, don’t walk away while it’s cooking, and load it up with shredded chicken, shrimp, cabbage, and fried shallots. The broth alone is worth the price.

Think about its overall taste (savory, sweet, sour), richness, and authenticity to the advertised flavor.
Think about their texture, consistency, and how well they held up in the broth.
