I first came across the Chin-Su PhoStory Beef Flavored Pho at the Winter Fancy Food Show in January and got to meet the team behind it. Chin-Su is one of Vietnam’s most established food brands and seeing them bring an instant pho to the US market was something I wanted to review properly. Pho is personal to me and I hold it to a high standard.
Produced in Vietnam.

What’s in the Package
Inside the Chin-Su PhoStory Beef Flavored package, youโll find a block of thin rice noodles and two seasoning sachets: a liquid sauce sachet containing the concentrated beef bone broth, and a dry seasoning sachet with beef flavoring, spices, and dried green onions.

How to Prepare It
This is a standard “soak and cover” method, making it very quick to put together:
- Place the rice noodles and the contents of both seasoning sachets into a bowl.
- Pour in boiling water up to the marked inner line (approximately 400ml).
- Close the lid and let it sit for 3 minutes.
- Open the lid, stir well to ensure the liquid sauce is fully incorporated, and serve.
How Does It Taste
The first thing that hit me when I opened this bowl was the smell. It’s unmistakably pho. The star anise and Asian cinnamon come through immediately and they smell like the real thing.
The broth is salty in the way a well-seasoned pho broth should be. There’s also a familiar MSG umami note underneath that rounds everything out and keeps the broth from feeling flat.
The dry imitation beef pieces are in there and they do their job. They’re not going to fool anyone but they add to the overall texture and give the bowl something to chew on alongside the noodles.
The noodles are flat rice noodles at a 2 out of 5 thickness. They carry the broth well and the overall bowl is satisfying in a way that a lot of instant pho products aren’t.
How Does It Compare
Instant pho is starting to become a crowded category and most products fail at the herbal depth that makes pho what it is. This one doesn’t. The star anise and cinnamon notes put it ahead of most competitors in that department. The closest comparison on the site in terms of Vietnamese-inspired broth products is the Vifon Instant Bean Thread Chicken Flavor. It’s also Vietnamese, also light on spice, but a completely different flavor profile. The Chin-Su is more complex and more satisfying as a standalone bowl.

How to Level Up Chin-Su PhoStory Beef Flavored
Fresh garnishes are what bridge instant pho and the real thing. A squeeze of lime and a handful of bean sprouts are my non-negotiable. The bean sprouts bring crunch and freshness that the dry format can’t provide on its own. Cilantro rounds it out with that distinctly Vietnamese herbal note. For protein, I would add thinly shaved beef dropped into the hot broth. The heat of the broth cooks it through in seconds. If you want something more convenient, throw in some Vietnamese beef meatballs.
Final Verdict
The Chin-Su PhoStory Beef Flavored Pho is one of the better instant pho products I’ve tried. The herbal depth is real, the broth is well-seasoned, and the flat rice noodles feel right in the format. It won’t replace a bowl from your local pho spot but as instant pho goes this is a satisfying bowl. Add your fresh garnishes, some protein, and a squeeze of lime and it comes very close.
