The Koka Satay Chicken Instant Noodles from Singapore come in a deceptively small package that expands into a generous portion of noodle. The first impression is that this is a much milder, creamier version of a traditional Laksa.

Produced in Singapore.

What’s in the Package

Inside the package, youโ€™ll find a square block of fried wheat noodles and two flavor sachets. The first is a dry seasoning powder and the second is seasoning oil.

How Does It Taste

The first thing James and I both noticed was that this tastes more like a mild Laksa than a satay. The broth is creamy and smooth from the non-dairy creamer and coconut oil and it carries a light curry flavor with a clear lemongrass note running through it.

There’s also a background vegetable note that reminded both of us of a Maggi seasoning packet.

The spice is mild at a 1 out of 5 but it has that characteristic back-of-throat hit that lets you know it’s there. It doesn’t build much but it’s noticeable.

The noodles are standard wheat at a 2 out of 5 on thickness with a reliable springy chew that holds up well in the creamy broth.

How Does It Compare

Within the Koka lineup on this site the Satay Chicken is the creamiest and most curry-forward variety. The Stir-Fry Original is the sweet soy dry noodle. The Pepper Crab has a more assertive and more distinctive flavor identity. The Satay Chicken sits in between. It’s more interesting than the Original, more approachable than the Pepper Crab.

For a closer comparison the Prima Taste Laksa La Mian is the benchmark for coconut curry instant noodles on this site. It’s significantly more complex and more convincing on the Laksa profile but also more expensive.

How to Level Up Koka Satay Chicken Instant Noodles

Fresh peanuts are our suggestion since the crunch and nuttiness are exactly what a satay profile needs. Fresh onions and more lemongrass sharpen the herbal notes and cut through the creaminess. A fried egg adds richness and rounds out the light curry broth.

Final Verdict

The Koka Satay Chicken Instant Noodles is a pleasant, creamy bowl that tastes more like a mild Laksa than a satay. The lemongrass note is the highlight and the coconut oil creaminess gives the broth more body than most budget instant ramens manage.
