Penang is one of the great food cities in Southeast Asia and Penang prawn noodles is one of its most celebrated dishes. KampongKu’s instant version has a lot to live up to. If you like shrimp flavored instant ramen this should be near the top of your list.
Produced in Malaysia.

What’s in the Package
Inside the KampongKu Penang Prawn Noodles package, you will find a premium, air-dried noodle block that is notably whiter than standard instant ramen. The flavor comes from two sachets: Prawn Paste, and a separate packet of Fried Shallots.

How to Prepare It
- Add the noodle block into 400ml of boiling water.
- Boil the noodles for 3 minutes.
- Add the Prawn Paste sachet into the pot with the noodles and water.
- Continue to cook for another 1 minute while stirring, allowing the paste to fully integrate into the noodles and thicken the broth.
- Pour into a bowl and garnish with the Fried Shallots just before serving.
How Does It Taste
The smell hits you before the bowl is even finished cooking. The moment hot water makes contact the shrimp is immediately in the room. James and I could smell it from across the kitchen. It’s intense and deeply shrimpy.
The broth is thicker than your average instant soup at a 3 out of 5 on viscosity. That body carries the flavor in a way that thin broths can’t. The flavor balance is sweet and salty with a fermented shrimp character that leans fully into authentic Southeast Asian funk. It reminded us of the broth you’d find in a Malaysian version of Bun Bo Hue or a Lao-style noodle soup.
The noodles are wavy and soft at a 2 out of 5 on thickness. More substantial than typical instant varieties and they pair perfectly with the crunchy fried shallots that come in the pack.

How Does It Compare
The most direct seafood comparison on the site is the Acecook Siukay Seafood 7 Level Spicy Noodles and the Po Po Cha Cha Spicy Clam Ramen. The Acecook has thicker noodles and more heat but a less distinctive seafood character. The Po Po Cha Cha has the better spice-to-seafood balance. The KampongKu has the most authentic Southeast Asian shrimp depth of the three and the thickest broth. If you want pure shrimp intensity this is the one.
How to Level It Up
Fish balls are the automatic addition here. The bowl feels incomplete without them. Drop them in while cooking and let them absorb the shrimpy broth. The texture combination of soft noodles, springy fish balls, and crunchy fried shallots is exactly where this bowl wants to be.
For more protein, a few prawns cooked directly in the broth reinforce what’s already there. A squeeze of lime and a handful of bean sprouts would be classic additions.

Final Verdict
The KampongKu Penang Prawn Noodles is one of the best seafood instant ramens I’ve reviewed. The shrimp intensity is immediate and real, the broth has depth from the fermented prawn character, and the included fried shallots are a nice touch that elevates the bowl above most competitors.
