This is not instant ramen. It’s instant Korean rice cakes, Tteokbokki, and it found its way onto this site for two reasons. First, I found it in the instant ramen aisle and anything in that aisle is fair game. Second, I will not pretend the Squid Game marketing on the packaging had nothing to do with it. It did.

Produced in South Korea.

What’s in the Package

Inside the Bibigo Tteokbokki package, youโ€™ll find two main components: a vacuum-sealed bag of shelf-stable rice cakes and a large red liquid sauce sachet featuring a chili icon to represent the hot and spicy flavor.

How to Prepare Bibigo Tteokbokki Rice Cake with Hot & Spicy Sauce

Begin by opening the package and placing the rice cakes along with the liquid sauce sachet into the bowl. Add approximately 50ml to 60ml of water, filling it up to the indicated line, and stir thoroughly to ensure the cakes are evenly coated. Place the lid back on loosely and microwave for 2 minutes to 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

After heating, let the cup sit for one minute to allow the sauce to thicken and the rice cakes to reach their ideal chewy texture. For the best results, try to separate the rice cakes by squeezing the bag before opening to ensure they cook evenly.

One small tip from experience: cook it for an extra 30 seconds beyond what the instructions say. The rice cakes get a little softer and the texture improves noticeably.

How Does It Taste

The first thing that hits you when you open this cup is gochujang. It’s immediate and unmistakable.

The spice level sits at a comfortable 2 out of 5. There’s warmth here and it’s balanced by a mild sweetness that keeps things from tipping into one-note territory. I could taste the gochujang clearly and underneath it the flavor of gochugaru, Korean chili flakes, which adds a slightly different dimension to the heat.

The rice cakes themselves were the perfect chewiness. They’re dense and springy in exactly the way Tteokbokki should be. This isn’t a noodle dish trying to approximate that texture. These are the real thing in instant format and they pull it off. I’ve also tried the cheesy version from the same brand and the texture holds up across both.

How To Level Up Bibigo Tteokbokki Rice Cake with Hot & Spicy Sauce

James recommended adding a raw egg cracked in while everything is still hot. Stir it in and it creates a richer, creamier sauce that clings to the rice cakes and takes the richness up significantly. Please note that consuming raw or undercooked eggs may increase your risk of foodborne illness, especially for certain individuals.

A splash of soy sauce adds savory depth and balances out the sweetness of the gochujang without fighting it.

Kimchi is the move if you have it. The tangy, crunchy fermented kick is exactly what this bowl needs alongside the sweet heat of the sauce.

Final Verdict

The Tteokbokki cup delivered in the ways that matter most. The gochujang flavor is real, the heat is balanced, and the rice cake texture is excellent. It’s not ramen and it’s not trying to be. It’s a solid instant version of one of Korea’s most beloved street foods and it earns its place in the instant ramen aisle. The Squid Game packaging got me in the door but the rice cakes are what will bring me back.
