I picked up the Bibigo Tteokbokki Rice Cake with Cheese Sauce at the peak of the Squid Game Season 2 hype and I am not going to pretend that had nothing to do with it. The packaging was doing its job. If you’ve already read my review of the spicy version, you know I have a soft spot for instant Tteokbokki.

Produced in South Korea.

What’s in the Package

Inside the package, youโ€™ll find two components: a vacuum-sealed bag of shelf-stable rice cakes and a large yellow sauce sachet featuring a cheese icon to represent the cheesy flavor.

How to Prepare It

These are the same as the spicy version: Begin by opening the package and placing the rice cakes along with the liquid sauce sachet into the bowl. Add approximately 50ml to 60ml of water, filling it up to the indicated line, and stir thoroughly to ensure the cakes are evenly coated. Place the lid back on loosely and microwave for 2 minutes to 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

After heating, let the cup sit for one minute to allow the sauce to thicken and the rice cakes to reach their ideal chewy texture. For the best results, try to separate the rice cakes by squeezing the bag before opening to ensure they cook evenly.

One small tip from experience: cook it for an extra 30 seconds beyond what the instructions say. The rice cakes get a little softer and the texture improves noticeably.

How Does It Taste

The cheese is the dominant flavor and it is not subtle. The cheesy sauce coats the rice cakes completely and delivers exactly what it promises on the label.

The rice cakes themselves are the real winner here. A perfect 5 out of 5 on chewiness. Dense, springy, and satisfying in every bite. If you love the texture of Tteokbokki this cup delivers that completely. This is a quick meal option that doesn’t require much thought or effort.

The main limitation is the flavor complexity. With the cheese doing all the work, the bowl becomes one-note fairly quickly. The spicy version has gochujang and gochugaru giving it layers to work through. The cheese version doesn’t have that same depth. It’s good but it needs something to break up the richness.

There’s a mild 1 out of 5 spice level in there which adds a little warmth but not enough to balance the cheese on its own.

How Does it Compare

The most natural comparison is the spicy version of this same product. That one has more complexity from the gochujang and gochugaru combination. The cheese version is simpler but no less satisfying on the texture front since both nail the rice cake chew equally. If you want flavor depth go for the spicy. If you want comfort food ease go for this one.

How to Level Up Bibigo Tteokbokki Rice Cake with Cheese Sauce

I would recommend sliced hot dogs ALL DAY. The classic salty and cheesy combo is hard to beat. It’s similar to when I add hot dogs to my macaroni and cheese.

A sprinkle of parmesan on top takes the cheesy profile to another level. For contrast, kimchi on the side or stirred in gives you the tangy, crunchy element that the bowl is missing.

Final Verdict

The Bibigo Tteokbokki with Cheese Sauce is comfort food in a cup. The rice cake texture is excellent, the preparation is easy, and the cheese flavor delivers on its promise. The bowl is one-note on its own but it responds well to additions. Hot dogs, parmesan, or kimchi each make it a more complete meal.
