Here is one of my absolute favorite flavor boosters: garlic! You know I’m all about taking instant ramen to the next level and garlic is a game-changer. Whether you want just a hint of that pungent goodness or a full-on garlic punch, there’s a way to make it happen in your next bowl.

1. Infusing the Broth with Whole Garlic

Want a gentle, savory garlic flavor that permeates your entire bowl without being too intense? Try adding whole garlic cloves directly to the water as it boils for your ramen noodles.

How I do it: Seriously, it’s as simple as peeling 2-3 whole cloves (or just smashing them a bit) and tossing them into the water right when you’re getting it hot for your noodles. As the water bubbles away and those noodles soften up, the garlic gently infuses its aromatic essence into the broth.

The Flavor Result: This method creates a subtle, mellow garlic background that enhances the overall savory notes of the ramen. It’s a fantastic way to add depth to milder flavored instant ramen. Plus, I like munching on the softened garlic cloves while I’m eating the noodles. They get all sweet and mild, and the intensity is tamed since they’ve been cooking in the broth.

2. Infusing the Broth with Sliced Garlic

If you want a slightly more noticeable flavor, sliced garlic works well. For tips on getting even slices and handling garlic efficiently, see my “how to cut garlic” post [link to your “how to cut garlic” post here]. The increased surface area allows for a bit more of that garlic goodness to seep into the liquid.

How I do it: Slice 2-3 garlic cloves thinly and add them to the water as it comes to a boil for your ramen. The cooking time will still mellow the garlic, but the slices release their flavor a little more readily than whole cloves.

The Flavor Result: You’ll get a slightly more pronounced garlic flavor compared to using whole cloves, but it will still be smooth and integrated into the broth. The thin slices also become tender and can be enjoyed along with the noodles.

3. Adding Fresh Minced Garlic at the End

Now, if you’re like me and sometimes you just NEED that fresh, sharp garlic punch, then mincing it up and throwing it in right at the end is the move. This way, it keeps all that vibrant flavor.

How I do it: Once my noodles are pretty much done (like, a minute before I’m about to slurp ’em down), I’ll stir in a good spoonful (or two, let’s be real) of freshly minced garlic. The heat from the hot noodles and broth just barely cooks it, taking off that super raw edge but keeping all that amazing garlicky zing.

The Flavor Result: You get that unmistakable fresh garlic bite that just wakes up your taste buds. It’s bright, it’s pungent, and it adds this fantastic layer of flavor that cuts through the richness of the ramen. Just don’t add it too early unless you want that cooked-down garlic flavor (which is also good, just different!).

4. Sauteing Minced Garlic with the Seasoning Powder

If you want to take your ramen to a whole new dimension of garlicky goodness, you HAVE to try sauteing minced garlic with the seasoning powder in a little oil (or no oil if you’re using a non-stick pan).

How I do it: In a non-stick pan, heat up a tiny bit of oil – like, a teaspoon of whatever I have on hand. Then I’ll throw in a good amount of minced garlic and cook it for about 30 seconds to a minute until it smells incredible and maybe gets just a tiny bit golden. You gotta watch it though – burnt garlic is the enemy! Then, I’ll dump in the instant ramen seasoning packet and stir it around with the garlic for like 15-30 seconds. The heat makes all those spices bloom and soak up that roasted garlic aroma. Finally, I’ll add the cooked noodles to the same pan.

The Flavor Result: This is where the magic happens. You get this deep, rich, almost caramelized garlic flavor that’s totally infused into the ramen seasoning. It’s savory, it’s umami-packed, and it’s seriously addictive. If you’re a garlic fiend like me, you NEED to try this.
